A proposal to ban smoking in all buildings owned or operated by the state is staying alive in the final days of the Legislature.

The legislation sponsored by Senator Roy Herron of Dresden unanimously passed the Senate State and Local Government Committee today after it was reopened to take up the measure. It's now scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor.

Lawmakers are hoping to wrap up next week.
