Governor will ban smoking in all state buildings

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced today that all state-owned buildings will be smoke-free starting Jan. 1.

Kaine will sign an executive order this afternoon prohibiting smoking in government buildings as well as state-owned vehicles.

Many state government offices already ban smoking, but the decision has previously been up to individual building managers, creating a hodge-podge of policies across Virginia.
