Judge Deadra L. Jefferson of the Charleston County Court of Common Pleas handed down a ruling of summary judgment in favor of the Town of Sullivan’s Island in its lawsuit defending the town’s recently-passed smoking ban ordinance.

She stated in her judgment the Town of Sullivan’s Island has the authority to protect the health and quality of life of its citizens by adopting a smoke-free ordinance affecting indoor public places. The judge also ruled the ordinance did not interfere with the intent of the 1996 Clean Indoor Air Act which allows the regulation of smoking in certain public places.
