A Chance for Smokefree Progress in Iowa!

Publication Date: 2007-04-09

Did you know that roughly 55% of the U.S. population is protected by a local or statewide 100% smokefree law in workplaces or public places? And, did you know that Iowa cities and counties are currently not allowed to pass strong smokefree indoor air laws because of tobacco industry tricks more than 5 years ago?

Now is our chance to take back local control! It's easy. Click here to take action today, and tell your state House representative to VOTE YES ON SF 236 to restore local communities' right to protect their residents and workers from secondhand smoke exposure in indoor public places.

The Senate passed the bill (SF 236) last week and now, the bill's fate is in the House's hands. It is unclear what the House will do at this point, so your representatives need to hear from you today! 500 Iowans die of secondhand smoke related diseases each year, and the general public is increasingly aware of the adverse effects of secondhand smoke. That is why Iowans like you support restoring local control to cities so they can regulate smoking in public places.

Tell your legislator, for a healthier Iowa, VOTE YES ON SF 236!
